1. CORANTIOQUIA

Creation

The Regional Independent Corporation of the Centre of Antioquia (CORANTIOQUIA) was created by law 99 of 1993, and initiated its activities on the 2nd of March of 1995, exerting as environmental authority since July 21st of the same year. Among the main responsibilities of the corporation it is executing policies, plans, programs and projects on the environment and natural resources, in accordance with the regulations established by the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development.

About us

CORANTIOQUIA is a corporative being of governmental function, national order, with its own patrimony, administrative and financial autonomy. It works with 80 municipalities of Antioquia, by the sustainable development and the quality of life of its inhabitants.
Vision

In the year 2019, the territory of CORANTIOQUIA™s jurisdiction will have a sustainable and competitive advantage of environmental goods and services, in national and international scopes. This will be achieved through environmental ordering and the articulated work of expert actors of the restrictions and the environmental potentialities. This way, the Corporation will contribute to the integral and equitable development, to the economic growth and the improvement of the quality of life of the communities.

Mision

To contribute to the accomplishment of the sustainable development, through the knowledge and the improvement of the environmental supplies and the administration of the use of resources to respond to its demand, though the construction of an environmental culture of the territory.


2. Planning

Strategic lines

The environmental management of CORANTIOQUIA, has like central axis the hydro resource, supported in three pillars: the environmental authority, the sustainability, and the protected areas for the water supply; pillars that are sustained, as well, in the joint of the five strategic lines, in which the materialization of the Regional Environmental Vision will look for within the framework of the Regional Environmental Management Plan (PGAR) 2007-2019.

Objective
1. Democratization of information for the generation of knowledge, participation and management. Generate a dynamic environmental knowledge that improves the understanding of the jurisdiction, to optimize decision-making and guarantee the transparency in management.
2. Environmental Planning for the proper occupation of the territory. To achieve that the territorial planning incorporates the generated environmental directions by the environmental zoning of the territory, to guide appropriate uses of land, contributing to sustainable development.

3. Integral management of the strategic areas and natural resources for the sustainable development of the regions.
To obtain the handling and sustainable use of renewable natural resources for the generation of environmental goods and services, considering like articulator axis water resources, in the definition and implementation of strategies of protection and conservation of strategic areas, as a contribution to environmental sustainability of the productive sectors and to the integral and balanced development of the communities.
4. CORANTIOQUIA, Articulator for environmental management in the territory To obtain the joint of the environmental strategic actors of the territory by defining powers, responsibilities, commitments and internal and external institutional strengthening
5. Training, participation and communication for the development of a responsible and ethical environment culture To make transversal the policy of National Education, in the context of Environmental Management that develops CORANTIOQUIA

Triennial Action Plan

The Triennial Action Plan (PAT) is a planning tool in the medium term, which will allow unifying interinstutional efforts to contribute to environmental improvement of the 80 municipalities of the centre of Antioquia, which are part of our jurisdiction, which has an approximated area of 36.000 km2 and a 4.454.617 population.

3. Organizational Structure Operational

Administrative and Finance Department

It integrally administers the institutional human talent, articulated to the strategy and the corporative processes. It identifies, improves and evaluates the organizational atmosphere and the culture in the Corporation. It identifies, evaluates and starts-up businesses, investments and projects economically profitable. It administers goods and services required for the operation of the Corporation. It identifies and develops new sources of institutional financing.


Department of Environmental Quality

It Makes and discloses reports of supply and demand in surface water, groundwater and atmospheric conditions in CORANTIOQUIA™s territory. It contributes to the conservation of the natural heritage in the jurisdiction by planning processes and regulation of different types of surface and groundwater. It designs and develops plans for monitoring and quality control of water for the improvement of the water network.

Structure programs and development projects for water sanitation, integrated management of solid and dangerous remainders and the air quality. It encourages cleaner production in the productive sectors for sustainability and competitiveness; facilitate their access to national and international markets. It promotes the generation of value chains through bio-renewable natural resources, green markets and ecotourism.
Department of Environmental Culture

It promotes social development and participatory solution of the common needs of the population and the environmental problems associated with the consolidation process of training and participation within the framework of national environmental policies, tending to the generation of work in network and articulated work intra and interinstitutional.


Department of Ecosystem

It Studies and improves the status and use of biodiversity and the elements of support of the one. It is responsible to maintain and recover the areas of highest environmental priority, looking for its promotion as protected areas. It takes part for the protection and conservation areas in water regulation. It formulates and manages the forest arrangements plans for natural forests in our jurisdiction. It Knows the status and trends use of water and land resources that serve as a base for its preservation and recovery. Aims for the sustainability of the resource soil through alternatives that allow recovery and/or restoration.


Department of Planning and Corporate Strategies

It formulates and tracks of Environmental Management Planning in coordination with the Regional Directorates. Builds strategic scenarios through the formulation, operation and monitoring of administrative, financial tools of administrative and management, among others. Exhibits and makes pursuit to the Regional Environmental Management Plan and Triennial Action Plans it develops. It Builds, improves and operates the corporative knowledge and information system in harmony with the National Environmental System Information (SINA). It continuously designs and improves the processes and procedures structuring of the Corporation. It Generates guidelines for environmental investment in the region and manages the bank of Corporative Projects, in order to optimize resources. Establishes guidelines for national and international cooperation within the framework of SINA, with the aim of strengthening inter-institutional relations.


Department of Regionalization

It articulates the institutional task between headquarters and regional headquarters. Projects, articulates and keeps track to the interaction of corporative subsystems, mission, strategic and support in the territory, within the process of regionalization. Defines, spreads and tracks the implementation of corporative criteria for the regulation of natural resources in the pursuit of the environmental authority.


4. Our services

Environmental Information Center

Inquiry into the courtroom. Loan of material at home. Interlibrary Loan. Loan material for photocopying. Loan of cartography for blueprints copying. Reference service: guidance in the handling of the bibliographical resources specialized bibliography compilation. Alerting service: bulletins of new acquisitions and tables of contents. Selective Dissemination of Information: base in the user™s profile content tables are prepared. Internet consultation. Inquiry database. Children's Room. Activities scheduled for the education of children and young™s.
Geographic Information Service (SIG)

Development of thematic cartography that supports the processes of the other procedures and corporative activities. Consultation and supply of cartography base and/or thematic projects for corporate entities of the National Environmental System or those other entities that require it. Consultation and supply of mapping bases and thematic for research projects, grade projects or monographs developed by the students of universities or research centres. Consultation and loan aerophotographies. Training in management of Global Positioning Systems and SIG tools for internal and external users. Process specialist geoinformation as algebra mapping, spatial analysis, geo-statistical analysis and modelling. Generation of thematic maps from digital processing of satellite imagery. Counselling and assistance in the implementation of SIG projects to other Independent Corporations and other entities.
Biodiversity Station Piedras Blancas

The Biodiversity Station Piedras Blancas, contributes to the understanding and conservation of the flora in the jurisdiction, through basic and applied research to include floral inventories and studies of pollen and spores, and research in the application of techniques useful in the spread and germplasm conservation of endangered species or potential use for the community. It consists of the Herbarium Reference Laboratory Palynology, Seed Laboratory and Germplasm Bank, the Tissue Culture Lab, and the place of plants.
Laboratory of Environmental Quality

The Laboratory of Environmental Quality, the IDEAM accredited under ISO 17025, is devoted to an analysis of raw water, wastewater and drinking: it determines inorganic physical and constituent properties; organic components, heavy pesticide metals, and microbiological tests. It offers permanent consultant's office in planning, taking of samples and guards until the accomplishment of the analyses; in addition, it offers verbal and written instruction for the taking, the storage and the transport of samples.
